Why is Skin Care So Important?

Your skin is not something you can replace, which is why taking care of your skin is so important.  Well cared for skin not only makes you appear younger, it helps your overall health. Your skin is your largest organ and protects your body from disease and infection; it regulates your body temperature, moisture retention and removal of toxins. Your skin is affected by every aspect of your life, from what you eat to where you live. Healthy skin is better able to stave off potential disease, fight signs of aging, and heals much better and faster than unhealthy skin.

If you are concerned with your appearance proper skin care is crucial.  Healthy skin appears full and vibrant, while unhealthy skin can appear pale and dull.  When skin is unhealthy it loses its youthful elasticity, and can sag and appear thin; wrinkles develop with more ease and sink deeper. Unhealthy skin can result in uneven patches becoming spotty or discolored. If you want to look young(er) and more vibrant you must take care of your skin.

Skin care is about more than looking good; it's about staying healthy. Poor skin care habits can lead to wrinkles, rashes, sores, and acne. Unhealthy skin is more likely to scar after an injury and is more susceptible to infection and disease. A skin care regimen should be part of your overall health and wellness plan.

You must remain vigilant in the care of your skin; your skin is constantly growing and changing.  Keep your skin hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day, and maintain a balanced diet to provide the vitamins and minerals your skin needs. Best results are derived from a diet consisting of fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains and lean protein. When spending any time outdoors you should always protect your skin by using a quality sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30.

Proper skin care means proper cleansing. When washing your face try using warm water or even cool water, you may find it invigorating.  You should also try to avoid harsh or chemical-heavy soaps, they tend to strip moisture from your skin. After bathing remember to keep your skin moisturized by applying lotion as soon as possible, preferably within the first few minutes. If dry skin is an issue, use an oil-based lotion on the problem area several times a day.
